April 22nd, 2009 2009 Grant, Culture and Animals Foundation
I would really like to thank the Culture and Animals Foundation for their continuing support of the We Animals project. Their 2009 grant will help with the costs of air and land travel, web updates and book design.
The CAF is a nonprofit, cultural organization committed to fostering the growth of intellectual and artistic endeavors united by a positive concern for animals.

March 26th, 2009 Former Hunters w/ Snares. Budongo Forest, Uganda
A significant part of Uganda's endangered chimpanzee population lives in Budongo Forest where poaching is common. Because most Ugandans do not eat primates, the poaching is mainly targeted toward wild pigs, duikers and other ungulates. However, as many as 25% of the area's chimpanzees have snare-related injuries, and hundreds of additional animals are killed each year. The Jane Goodall Institute and its partners such as Budongo Conservation Field Station have implemented a program that hires former hunters from surrounding villages to go out into the forest and remove these traps |
February 22nd, 2009 Rachel's Promise. Cameroon (www.cwaf.org)
I'm thrilled to be working on a story about the fulfillment of Rachel Hogan's promise to Nkan Daniel and Shai, the rescued gorillas she raised when she first came to the Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund eight years ago. May 6th update: Look for the full story in the September issue of ELLE Magazine (Canadian Edition), as well as images from Ape Action Africa (formerly CWAF) throughout the We Animals portfolio. |
January 29th, 2009 Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania
I will be working on We Animals in Africa until mid-April. The Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund ( open link) has an incredible primate sanctuary where I'll be volunteering. From there, I'll head into Uganda, hopefully to document the amazing work at Ngamba Island Sanctuary, as well as aspects of the illegal bush meat and primate trade.
Thank you for all of your emails in support of my work and the project. It fuels the fire!
Check back in late April for new photos and stories. |
January 7th, 2009 The Horse. El Estor, Guatemala.
She didn't move the entire time. Old, too skinny, eyes half closed, seemingly meditative. I watched her as she stood knee deep in Lago de Izabal, taking part in the sunset, taking part in her thoughts, and ignoring the younger horse that paced, anxiously awaiting her from shore.
I wish I could have known her thoughts. | |
