September 6th, 2009 The Lives of Layer Hens
There's a misconception that eating eggs is a kinder diet then eating chickens, because the food in question isn't killed. The lives that layer hens endure in order to produce eggs, however, is arguably worse than those of birds raised for meat. Their confinement is even more restricted than broilers (chickens used for meat), their lives are longer, and they are slaughtered in the end as well.
This photo was shot recently at a factory farm which held over 25,000 layer hens. Each tiny cage held 4 to 6 birds. Hundreds were dead and dying in these conditions. |
August 26th, 2009 Newborns at a Factory Farm
I'm presently working in Spain, documenting bullfighting as well as factory farming. I don't think this photo needs much explanation, but... the babies are born onto metal bars in their mother's excrement. The mother can't turn around and she can barely stand up. In the week following their birth, the piglets will have their teeth and tails cut, their ears tagged and tattooed and will be taken away from their mothers at 21 days. They will live, constricted, filthy and abused until they are killed for food, or they will become sows used for breeding. The sows are usually bred up to eight times before being sent to slaughter. |
July 29th, 2009 1,000 Aeroplan points donated to We Animals for every travel booking through Judi Schulz
I met Judi Schulz at a Jane Goodall Institute fundraiser a few years ago, and have since had the pleasure of photographing her companion animals. She is now generously supporting We Animals.
“In support of Jo-Anne and her work, I will donate 1000 points per booking made through me. All you need to do is mention Jo–Anne and the wonderful work she does.
She’ll get the assistance she needs to fund her travel for these projects, I will help you plan the holiday you need and we’ll all feel good.”
Her contact info is judi.schulz@travelcounsellors.ca, or 1.905.338.8693.

July 11th, 2009 Donate aeroplan miles to we animals!
This is a call-out for Aeroplan miles! The deal has finally gone through, and Aeroplan is generously supporting We Animals through their charitable pooling program. THIS MEANS YOU CAN DONATE AEROPLAN MILES TO THE PROJECT FOR FREE until August 21st! (there is usually a fairly hefty cost associated w/ point-sharing). This is a wonderful way of supporting the project because it helps offset the high costs of travel involved in producing We Animals. My goal is to raise 800,000 points, which will cover most of the flights to upcoming investigative shoots, including fur farming in Europe, bullfighting in Spain and France, the "swim with dolphins" tourist industry in South East Asia, an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee, and many more.
Please contact me at info@weanimals.org for information about how to donate. It's quite simple, actually: I just need a bit of information from you, and your Aeroplan number, and we're set. Please do consider helping the project in this capacity. It's a generous way of showing your support without having to hand over actual dollars. I will gratefully acknowledge your support by listing your name or company on the We Animals website. |
July 10th, 2009 More animals die at the 2009 Calgary Stampede
Another Stampede draws to a close, another year of celebrating the bullying of animals, another year of animal deaths on the track and in the ring, but more importantly, another year of millions upon millions of dollars made for Calgary. There's a lot of money at stake when compassionate Canadians speak up against the inherent cruelty towards animals at the Calgary Stampede. Thank you to the activists who tirelessly speak up for the voiceless. And, SHAME to those who continue to visit and support the Stampede. | |
