Lantern Books is using images from We Animals in their upcoming book Teaching the Animal. The textbook is meant for teachers of Human-Animal Studies, providing "a comprehensive overview of the state of the disciplines in question, as well as the philosophical and practical issues involved in discussing the intersections of human and nonhuman animals in society."

Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary, Australia

At the entrance to this idyllic farm animal sanctuary in Australia, one reads the words "If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others...why wouldn't we?"

I love the statement for its simplicity.

It's an easy enough concept with an equally easy answer. Where animals are concerned, we can chose not to eat them. The owner of Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary is Pam Ahern, whose aim is to rescue animals as well as educate people about vegetarianism. Pam's sanctuary is a bright light, a haven from the hellish darkness of factory farming.

In this photo, Pam gives her first rescue, Edgar, some TLC.

Tuna Fishing. Mauritius, 2009.

While I was in Mauritius last December, it was strange having our incognito Sea Shepherd boat constantly surrounded by commercial fishing vessels, many from Japan.
In this photograph, a Japanese tuna fishing vessel unloads 400 frozen tuna from its boat into trucks destined for I'm not sure where.

I don't foresee the property status of animals changing any time soon....

Ashli Taylor, dedicated animal rights activist, vegan and friend

The death of our friend Ashli Taylor leaves a gaping hole in the hearts of her family, friends and the animal rights community. In her words, she strived to "promote veganism, dismantle the property status of animals, end speciesism, abolish cruelty and exploitation, and defend animal rights.I am one of many who desire a world where all animals are free from human control and domination. To this end, we strive for the abolition of all practices of human tyranny over the animal kingdom."
Ashli was a vital part of so many animal rights groups. A vegan of 18 years, her energy for helping animals was boundless. She showed up at countless animal events, protests and fundraisers with a great smile and positive spirit.
She and I became acquainted about a year ago, and she quickly became one of We Animals' biggest cheerleaders. She encouraged and buoyed me in so many ways, and we exchanged many laughs and hugs when we would see each other.
The loss of Ashli is tragic for all who knew her and for the animals she worked so hard to help and protect. There are so few animal rights activists, fewer still as dedicated and courageous as Ashli.
We will miss her so much.
Thank you for sharing your warmth and energy with us, Ashli.
I'm writing this from Australia, having just finished volunteering with Sea Shepherd and doing some animal rights work while here as well. It's a small gesture, but I'd like to dedicate my efforts in helping animals this year to Ashli.
Ashli, you are loved and missed.
